Outlive Your Life by Max Lucado

Outlive Your Life is a thought provoking and heart moving book that spurs us on to live out the Great Commission. Max Lucado is a very visual author. He rarely tells you that this or that happens, rather he shows you with word pictures. That is one reason his writing flows so well.

This book was brought about by three questions that were presented to the author:
Q 1. Had you been a German Christian during World War II, would you have taken a stand against Hitler?
Q 2.. Had you lived in the South during the civil rights conflict, would you have taken a stand against slavery?
Q 3. When your grandchildren discover you lived in a day in which 1.75 billion people were poor and 1 billion were hungry, how will they judge your response?

Mr. Lucado urges us to get out of our clam shells that we hide inside to deny the hurt around us. He encourages us to do as the Bible says and help everyone we can as if they were actually Jesus.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I highly recommend it. You can purchase it from Alibris here  if you'd like.

Book Review of The Heavens Proclaim His Glory

This book is by far one of the best books I have ever read. It contains truly spectacular pictures of God's creation, in full color glossy pages. These pictures were taken by the Hubble telescope.

Accompanying the pictures are Bible verses and quotes. These pictures are really amazing. Some that come to mind are:

  • Detailed photos of Pluto.
  • Stars being born.
  • The remnant of the brightest star in our galaxy that was visible over 1000 years ago.
  • Luminous gasses in outer space.
This book is so relaxing and reassuring to read. Just realizing the awesomeness of God and that we are truly in His hands is such a wonderful feeling. This book will also humble you. I think everyone should read this book. It is an experience you don't won't to miss.

He has made the earth by His power.
He has established the world by His wisdom.
And has stretched out the heavens at His discretion.
Jeremiah 10:12

Book Review of Let's Do Lunch by Roger Wilson

Let's Do Lunch was an interesting read. It was written in a conversational tone which I feel does a good job of keeping the reader's interest. Mr. Wilson certainly knows that his program works, being that he used to be over 400 pounds and he is not obese at all now.

I agree with much of what his book says, for instance that all sugar cravings can and should be curbed with fruit and stevia. I also agree that potatoes are fattening. I don't agree with eating fruit for dinner. Maybe one day I'll give that part a try, but not now. I also believe that there is a place for nuts and seeds in the diet, especially if you are using them instead of meat.

I think that there are good points you can take from this book even though I don't agree with it all. I do recommend it, but being a vegetarian I don't endorse all of the recipes it contains. I do plan to try the vegan recipes in the book, though, as some of them look quite good! You can purchase the book here for a good price.

The Language of Love and Respect Book Review

I am reading The Language of Love and Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs for the second time, this time with my husband.

To be honest, I almost did not choose this book to review. When I first saw it my initial response was that I had read lots of books on marriage and that this one wasn't likely to be different. But, it turns out I was very wrong.

This book, that I do highly recommend, makes perfect sense, and the author gets his conclusions about men and women straight from the Bible. The basis of Dr. Eggerich's book is that women crave mostly love, while men crave mostly respect. These different needs color how men and women see the world.  He tells of how men see in blue and women see in pink. He teaches men and women how to decode one anther and live as peaceably as possible, recognizing each others differences as not wrong but as strengths that the other can draw upon at times.

Dr. Eggerich teaches readers about the various cycles that married couples find themselves on, how those cycles are fed, and how to spend most of the time on the right ones. He is very candid about how couples can naturally fall into bad communication, and how to safegaurd against it. I especially liked how he honestly shared teachable moments from his relationship with his wife to help the reader along and reassure that even he and his wife still have their moments of miscommunication.

All in all, I think that The Language of Love and Respect is a very useful book. I recommend all adults to read it. It will really open your eyes to a lot of things and cause you to be more understanding and compassionate, and hopefully more Christ-like.

Living With Confidence In A Chaotic World

I recently had the privilege of reading Dr. David Jeremiah's "Living With Confidence In A Chaotic World". It kept my interest from the very beginning.

Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of dealing with life's current situations. Dr. Jeremiah reminds us to Stay Calm, Compassionate, Constructive, Challenged, Connected, Centered, Confident, Consistent, Committed, and Convinced.

For each attribute we are to display, he provides very interesting true stories and little known facts, as well as solid Scripture to back up and cement it all.

My favorite part of the book came toward the end when he began to empasize that we are to be ready. He pointed out that we do not know the exact time- day, month, or year the Lord is coming but we do know that we are in or are very close to the season of our Lord's coming. He told an interesting story where one man say that he 'stays ready to keep from getting ready'. That really touched something within me.

Basically, what I got out of the book was to keep our eyes on Jesus. He truly does have everything under control. When trouble comes along it is such a temptation to focus on the situation, and that is when we start to feel helplessly lost and hopeless. When you focus on the Word of God and on growing as a Christian, then you are able to gain the correct perspective once more. Dr. Jeremiah reminds us of all of this in such an eloquent way.

I highly recommend this book. I am confident that you will close this book feeling renewed and having greater confidence in Our Lord and Savior.

What Difference Do It Make?

What Difference Do It Make? is a book about and by Ron Hall, who is a millionaire art dealer, and Denver, who was a homeless man for many years. Lynn Vincent also wrote some of the book as well, probably contributing the very interesting short stories throughout the book.

Denver Moore is a black man who was raised on a sharecropping farm, knowing no other way of life. He finally left the farm after realizing he was never going to get out ahead, and through events in his life, became homeless. Ron Hall is a white millionaire, who begins to help homeless people with his wife before she passes away. Ron figures that he actually passed Denver for years on his way to work without really noticing it, since Denver stayed around the area of Ron's office while living on the streets.

This book basically tells how one action leads to so many other actions and reactions in other people's lives. Denver reminds us that what God uses one person to start, He often uses others to finish; That no action is insignificant.

This book is very interesting indeed. It is very inspiring as well. I have a few problems with it however. In a few places in the book I feel that it is suggesting that it doesn't really matter who helps and for what reason, but being a Christian I know that our righteousness is as filthy rags. When we ask God to empty us of our selfish selves and use us so that His name may be glorified, that is when we will be a part of His purpose. We must be careful not to start following after humanism, but rather to seek to be God's hands and feet.

As long as one has a firm grasp on their faith and won't be tempted to think we are all good inside, I do think this will be a good read. God bless! :o)

Fearless by Max Lucado

Whether you have been reading Max Lucado's books for a while or this is the first one for you, you will not walk away disappointed. In his newest book, Fearless, Mr. Lucado takes us through several different manifestations of fear and provides us with the antidote for each one, provided by the powerful Word of God.

Before I actually started reading this book I knew it would be good but I really didn't know if it would tell me anything I didn't already know concerning fear. Boy was I wrong. He has a way of writing that is so conversational, yet so enlightening. He seemed to use just the right example for each fear as he explained it and just the right Bible verse.

I was secretly shocked to know that I wasn't the only one who had thought/ struggled with some of the issues he writes about. My eyes were opened to the fact that sometimes we live our lives in such a way that we do not even know we are living fearfully in an area of our life. We become complacent and erroneously think that our fear laden living (reactions) are normal.

All in all I have to tell you that this book will open your eyes and cause you to examine yourself. And after examining yourself you can call on God and give Him that fear that you may not have even been aware of and He can take His rightful place as God in your life, as you trust in Him, and Him alone.
